The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) has named the Miami Township Police Department as a 'Flagship Agency' during their recent re-accreditation process.

The CALEA Flagship Program, one of the most sought-after distinctions of any police department in the United States, is designed to acknowledge the achievement and expertise of some of the most successful CALEA accredited public safety agencies.

CALEA has named only 59 Flagship Agencies in the U.S., making the Miami Township Police Department a member of the “Best of the Best” club.

“Accreditation assures the community that its law enforcement agency is committed to high quality service and that its policies and procedures are effective, responsive, fair and equitable,” Chief Steve Bailey said.

The Miami Township Police Department was accredited for a fifth time by CALEA in December.

“Of the 17, 000 law enforcement agencies in the U.S., less than 4% are accredited by CALEA,” said Sylvester Daughtry, Jr., CALEA's Executive Direc¬tor. “The award signifies the agency has successfully met the requirements of a highly regarded and broadly recognized body of law enforcement stan¬dards.”

CALEA was established to develop a process that provides state and local law enforcement agencies an opportunity to demonstrate voluntarily that they meet an established set of law enforcement standards.

To celebrate the re-accreditation, Chief Bailey presented his officers with a commemortive framed photograph to honor the "teamwork" it took to achieve the status. Chief Bailey also honored Jennifer Heideman, Accreditation Manager for the Police Department, with a similar framed photo.
