Police Department honors officers with awards

The Miami Township Police Department presented awards to several of its top officers at a recent Board of Trustees meeting.

Officer Keith Benhase and Officer Scott Ball each received a Meritorious Service Commendation following an Oct. 2005 incident in which they assisted in the search for a juvenile who was threatening suicide. The officers were able to secure the juvenile without harm.

Officer Benhase and Officer Aaron Warren also received a Meritorious Service Commendation for their actions during a fire at Pebble Brooke apartments. At great risk to their personal safety, both officers entered the burning building to seek out victims and to offer assistance to those residents who were in the process of evacuation. Officer Benhase was able to help one resident out of the apartment and carry one of her five children to safety.

Officer Benhase has been employed by the Miami Township Police Department since 1997. He is assigned as one of the District 2 Patrol Officers for Miami Township. Officer Ball has been employed by the Miami Township Police Department since 1999. He is assigned as one of the District 3 Patrol Officers for Miami Township. Officer Warren was a Reserve Police Officer for Miami Township from 2004 until this year when he resigned so he could accept a promotion at his place of full-time employment.

Also honored at the meeting was Detective John Swing as the Miami Township Police Department employee of the year. Detective Swing arrested 44 Criminals, charged them with 71 felonies, and 18 misdemeanor crimes. What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is that that Detective Swing was in Command School during the first four months of 2005, meaning that he accomplished all of this in only eight months.
